The Next system update which is coming in late November will come with the ability to download third party release demos for their upcoming games via the eshop. It is also possible to download eshop content and put your 3DS to sleep and not interrupt any downloads. This was confirmed by Satoru Iwata and is mentioned in the Japanese Nintendo website.
